A word of advice…

Ahmedumair.com officially kicks off now!

Starting off on a serious note: Keeping in mind the way things are going in Pakistan, I would like to advice all of you that you should really take all precautions to protect yourself and the people around you. Stopping when the police stops you, avoiding crowded places, avoiding unnecessary contact with strangers, etc. are all just a part of common sense. But there is something that you should do immediately because what I just heard is shocking.

A couple of years back, a friend of mine, Omer Bashir Chaudary, needed to buy a Warid connection and somehow it happened that he used my National Identity Card (NIC) to do it. Time went by normally, he got a new postpaid number and later on lost that SIM.

I had forgotten about it and I was minding my own business until a while ago when I got a call from him. He asks me, “How man SIMs do you have issued on your NIC?”, I told him, “Two. I’m using one and you have the other.” and he tells me to get it blocked because he has lost the SIM. Being the lazy and procrastinating kind I am, I said “Forget about it.”

He got all serious and goes, “There was a raid on my neighbor’s house and the police took a woman with them because there was a SIM registered on her NIC being used in Peshawar and her number was used in one of the recent bombings.” Hearing his story, I have to admit I felt uncomfortable enough that I paused everything I was doing and started writing this blog.

I called Warid and I told the agent that I want to get my other SIM blocked. I told him the number and he said that I don’t own it. I was surprised, and I insisted that he should search my NIC in his system. He told me to follow the following steps (I reckon you should all do it too):

Step 1: On your mobile phones, open a new message.

Step 2: Type in your complete NIC number without the dashes (for example; 3520212345678 instead of 35202-1234567-8).

Step 3: Send it to 668.

Step 4: If there are any unwanted and/or unrecognized mention(s) of SIMs owned by you, you should visit the nearest relevant franchise and get that SIM reported.

… Or you can always visit PTA’s SIM Information System – 668 and check out the SIMs issued on your NIC.

Be safe.
